Considering that in D&D (which I assume this is, considering the symbol of Ilmater on Shangdariel's armour), class levels are an indicator or great skill and ability, and that a 1st-level fighter is equivalent to a sergeant (IIRC), having an 18th-level fighter with a 3-level barb dip really is literal overkill.

I'm loving the obvious Disney's Mulan rip off with D&D mechanics. I can even hear "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" in the background.
