I think that if the anime had time progression and the characters aged (and had actual achievable goals), the series would be better. But that's my opinion, let's hear others.

If the series had time progression, then Satoshi and Pikachu would no longer be the star. And we can't have that...
Of course, I'd be all for it. I would want to finally see how Haruka and Kasumi turn out. And there is some slight time progression in the show. Just hardly any in comparison to the events they've gone through.

I think if they had moved onto different trainers with every season that we would have had a much more epic/original/memorable show.

They did try to do that once. Instead, they just basically 'rebooted' the show with a female version of Satoshi (Hikari). And even then, they just dumped Satoshi and Pikachu back in the show soon after.
But I agree, it would have been much better if every 'gen' when the next major game came out, the new trainers took over. The problem is, Pikachu just became too popular...

Which could easily be worked around by giving each new protagonist a starter Pikachu as well. Or at least one of the first 3. So Hikari chose Piplup? Have her get a Pikachu stometime in the next 3-4 episodes. Cause I'm damn sure Pikachu > Satoshi. Then again, i wish they would be an anime of the games featuring Red. But hey, they'd probably butcher that.

That's not quite how it works in the show... Power of friendship and love and all that between Satoshi and Pikachu.
I still think Satoshi and company should've left the show after Johto at the latest. Then make cameos as adults in later series so we see how they turned out.
Seeing different trainers with different backgrounds and philosophies would have been really great, the same way that Silent Hill follows a different character each time but with similar formulas for the tone and psychological aspects.
One could have been withdrawn from people, another could have been kind of a jerk at first, one could be someone with good skills that gets humbled at the first gym. So much wasted potential...

Exactly. We already know damn enough about Ash/Satoshi's power of freindship. Its pretty much been established sinced the first movie. Or heck, since the first Gym battle against Brock/Takashi. We've already seen Pikachu's and Ash/Satoshi's freindship build up to god like levels. If they were to reboot the series, we can get a different spin. Hikari catching a pikachu. Piplup getting jealous. Power of freindship unites all 3 of them in an epic battle. Theres nothing more to be said about Ash/Satoshi and Pikachu that we already didnt know.

Yes, alot of easted potential indeed. In the end, the anime pretty much became a way to advertise the new pokemon. Thats why Ash/Satoshi always goes back to square 1. Even if we ignore the fact that Pikachu should be damn level 999 by now.
