The "contest between Red and White" is most likely a reference to Kouhaku, a year-ending music and variety TV show that has been showing for more than 50 years, in which red (the guys) and white (the girls) compete and perform their greatest hits. It's notable for mixing modern pop and rock acts with more traditional and Enka-style singers.
