it *might* be acceptable if it was ponytail style long hair, though, but that I've only seen in a short-haired version

Nope, no one knows really. It doesn't really help that there seems to be three dominant 'styles' to them: one following Aki Eda, one following ZUN's art, and one that doesn't cling to the former two.
