I was curious whether the idea of Oni not lying had any historical truth. Searching for the phrase "Oni do not lie" on Google brings up the Dragonball wiki, where it states "Oni do not lie, because King Yemma severely punishes them for it ("will tear my tongue off")." (Sounds like a familiar punishment) Couldn't find much more. Perhaps ZUN is a Dragonball fan?

You mean whether it had any basis in folklore? I've definitely heard of something like that when I was a kid (about how humans can defeat oni by outsmarting and tricking them), and this was definitely before Dragonball...but I can't find any references online, either.

I always took that as Suika being tricky, not outright lying. The two concepts become conflated quite often in Japanese writing.
Considering that Oni are prideful and "wouldn't resort to trickery like humans do", that makes just as much sense as the less believable "Suika lies".

Huh... I didn't know that. Where was this said? Can't call myself a Suika-fan if I don't read everything Suika after all.
