Heard this type of story often for several online games that lock characters behind paywalls (or steep unlock requirements bypassed by paying): release an OP character every player will want to have as quickly as possible to make them pay real money, and later release a patch to nerf the character. LoL has been accused of doing this several times, and Overwatch 2 was lambasted for locking Kiroko behind a Battle Pass.
