I could give it a bash in PS to even it out a bit, but what is the view on uploading the edit (providing it turns out ok)? As it wouldn't be my image and the edit not by the original artist would it be allowed as a child post here?

I'm no staff but I've seen edits crop up before. So long as you didn't claim rights over the edited pic, you should be fine.
