It's not readily apparent to me how you open it for maintenance, though.

It's just a fancy SCAR with an integrated Mk. 13 grenade launcher and a folding multi-position butt stock.

Doesn't look like it's ambidextrous, though. And I don't quite see the point of that front sight, what with that readout-thing in the way.

It's a backup, I'd say. Iron sights can't run out of battery power.

It appears to be offset a bit to the right side of the rifle. Which is common for backup sights.

Looks awfully heavy for an assault rifle. Sure, it'd have low recoil because of that, but it'd be a pain to lug around if somebody really tried to turn this into a production model

All you need to complement this is a foot-long plug/screw-in bayonet installable on the GL barrel. Voila, ranged/melee weapon in one pack.

It might be lighter than it looks. The reason why is because it looks like a mix between the XM8 and Scar. Both aren't heavy. The reason it looks heavy is because it has been completely decked out.

Weight distribution is critical. Everything is cramped way too far in the front here, the action, the GL, gas system, everything. It looks so front heavy my left arm hurts just from looking at it.

Uh, actually, the XM8 was fairly heavy for its class. It was implied that was part of the reason the XM8 program was canceled instead of the XM8 being designated M8 and subsequently entering production. Every time H&K fixed something with the XM8, it got heavier, too.

If not for the weight, the US military would probably have adopted the XM8 (political problems of the time and OICW project aside).
