Ah yes, THAT version. The wolf is cut open, grandma comes out and the wolf is still alive. They fill the wolf's stomach with stones and sew him back up. Either he dies directly or indirectly because of the stones or magically lives but eternally imprisoned because of the stones.

after being filled up with stones he wakes up and goes for a drink, falls into the water and is never seen again

Any of these is possible. It is also possible that for the first time in decades, grandma was feeling warm, embraced and well-hydrated while inside the wolf's digestive system. The shock of returning to the normal world might have been terribly traumatic.
