Artist's commentary:

太平洋戦争初期に運用されていた、アメリカ海軍の主力艦上戦闘機。
艦上戦闘機としては及第点といえる性能を有していたものの、相手が悪すぎました。そのライバルだった零戦と比べ、速度性能・上昇性能・機動性のいずれもが完全に劣っており、常に苦戦を強いられました。
その為零戦相手には一撃離脱戦法やウィーブなどの新戦法の採用など、戦術面で対抗し何とか後継機のF6Fヘルキャットの登場までこぎつける事に成功しました。
一方ヨーロッパでは速度重視のドイツ機相手に艦上機特有の翼面荷重の低さを活かし、格闘戦を挑み戦果を上げています。

Artist's commentary:

Grumman F4F Wildcat was a US Navy carrier-based mainstay fighter aircraft in action during the early stages of the Pacific War.
Although it had the abilities necessary to a carrier-based fighter aircraft, the enemy was too tough. It was totally inferior to its rival the Zero in speed, rate of climb, and maneuverability, and was constantly put under pressure during hard fighting.
Because of this, it competed tactically against its rival the Zero, using tactics such as 'hit and run' and 'weave,' and somehow managed to hold out until the arrival of its successor, the F6F Hellcat.
On the other hand, it achieved military gains in Europe by making use of its low wing loading, which is characteristic of carrier-based aircraft, in dogfights with the German rivals that placed emphasis on speed.
