As part of the payment for the contract, Dream had to become a host to the Nightmare. Letting it eat its way into his stomach and fuse with his internal organs allowed it to permanently survive in the physical realm. Once surviving the ordeal, Nightmare contractors all possess different abilities depending on the type of their nightmare parasite. Dreams ability is exceptional with him not only being able to cocoon himself in a defensive shell, but also be offensive by channeling the nightmares consuming power in his weapons.
