Long story short, the local election bill was suspected to unfairly benefit outgoing President Jokowi's family and associated political groups. Among the controversial changes proposed in the bill was a proposal to change the age requirements for provincial governor candidacy, from requiring the candidate to be 30 years old at the time of filing the candidacy, to being 30 years at the time of taking office, meaning that, if passed, a candidate did not have to be 30y/o when beginning their campaign or even during a governor election itself. Jokowi's youngest son, Kaesang, who will only turn 30y/o on 25 December, was speculated to have been planning to run either directly in a provincial governor election or become a running mate. Jokowi's family has faced allegations of political dynasty for over a year, and the timing of this bill with Kaesang-related events inflamed suspicions.
