That's the first time I see shutter chance (wasei) "translated" as "kodak moment".
    -From a Kodak advertising campaign.
-A sentimental or charming moment worthy of capturing in a photograph.
    ...really?

Well, I was only the Editor for hard translating the entire Doujin (Hence, I used someone from Voile's Translation for it)

"Kodak moment" works in English far better than "Shutter chance," which is almost nonsensical... I'm sure we can forgive the lapse into idiom.

Agreed. I also like to use "photo op", but this is definitely a good English translation of the idiom.

How is "shutter chance" almost nonsensical? It's perfectly descriptive of that perfect 1/250th of a second.

It's...well, it's awkward and unfamiliar in English. "Kodak moment" and "photo op", by comparison, are recognized phrases among native speakers of English.

Not really, not when there is a perfectly good bit of idiom that can be used that works in English.

    howto:translate also says:
But within the above, make sure your English is idiomatic and well-written. To translate you have to be good in English as well as Japanese. Wooden translations mimicking the Japanese word-for-word can hardly count as translations, and usually help no-one. Try to select idioms with the same meanings as Japanese counterparts. It's usually okay to adjust metaphors slightly to make them sound better, but try not to be excessive in your adjustments.

    and

One final note: if you're confident you know what you're doing, your own good judgement trumps these "rules". Translating is an art and as such there are really no hard and fast rules that always apply. Think of these as good advice or as style guidelines.

"Photo op" and "Kodak moment" preserve the meaning as equivalent idioms, so accuracy is preserved without sacrificing English fluency.

    Not quite...
both those terms refer to situations...

As notflu described, 'Shutter chance' refers to an instant...

So can "photo op" and "Kodak moment". Not all photo ops are extended sessions; some can be just an instant opportunity for a good shot. "Kodak moment" has shifted meaning in popular usage so it can also refer to a perfect moment in which to take a memorable picture. I stand by my judgment.

I like "photo op" over "Kodak moment", personally; the latter has a bit of a chintzy, sarcastic feel to it, and is less widespread besides.

Anyone who thinks "shutter chance" is a standard English phrase has utterly divorced themselves from the world of the real.

Outside of Photographers, 'photo op' generally brings to mind something one would find at a political rally...

And standard English or not, 'Shutter chance' is still completely understandable...

First, let's draw out the evil spirit from the darkness.
Well, exorcising is one of my jobs, so...
    Enjoy your Kodak moment.
    But that's just the Tengu.
    Ouuuch
    That's gotta hurt...
See, that's the evil spirit you were talking about.
    Eh? Like this?
    First, raise your hands.
I'm not gonna be tricked into... Kumaaaaaaaaa! Kumaa reference.
