[Danbooru]'s basically a glorified hentai website, and they act like manchildren.
Ah, no it isn't; Danbooru's a quality-focused anime/anime-adjacent art gallery. The hentai is, at most, tolerated (and it's been a while since I last checked, but I'm pretty sure that Explicit-rated posts are just a relatively small percentage of what gets uploaded here); I'm sure that if hosting it started causing non-trivial problems for the site's continued functioning, site staff'll clear it out with only minor reluctance, if that. I will say, though, that Danbooru in its present state is an adult site -- but "adult" doesn't mean "second coming of PornHub," and does mean that users are expected to act like adults.

To check your hypothesis, here is the breakdown of a year's worth of posts, counting back from today:

I agree with everything you said except this, mainly because there are plenty of site staff that enjoy the hentai and because we still host content even more controversial than regular hentai that has proven to be an existential threat to other websites.

Not to mention that the NSFW stuff has caused non-trivial problems for the site's ability to function, and the idea of purging it from the database hasn't even been floated, much less suggested as an acceptable sacrifice.
To even say it's "tolerated" is painting a very unfair picture of Danbooru's opinion on the content. Admins and mods upload about as much NSFW art as anyone else does, and they aren't shy about approving it. Art is art and danbooru is an archive for quality art, regardless of its explicit nature or potentially controversial subject matter. If it's not illegal and doesn't look like shit, it's as welcome here as anything else.
As an added point, the site's current owner, evazion, hates having to hide content from users. He has always done it as a last resort with great reluctance. I can't imagine he would ever want to outright remove something if it wasn't just straight illegal unless he absolutely had to for the site's well-being. Even the site's indefinite inability to get a payment processor only resulted in the nuking of a few problematic tags that users were making a total mess of. None of the content responsible for the problem has been touched.
