I would guess that Rydia is trolling Yuna about the self sacrificial nature of her summonership.

That would make Rydia one hell of a troll, given that she can cast Meteor (Meteo?), a spell that was suicide to an earlier character in the game.

Mind you, said character was up there in age. That said, it probably sapped all the strength he had left.

But even then, Rydia's more awesome because she, hardly an adult even by physical progression, can do comparable damage as two wizened magi.

Who can blame Doormat erm, I mean Yuna. Its as bad as the fact that she has to be around characters like Tidus, Seymour, and Waka. Not to mention a final boss that is a complete fucking joke.

Actually Rydia's black magic learning progression is slower than Palom's due to how she also has summoning spells. But comparing the two, Yuna's something of a 1-2 trick pony (1 sans summons) while Rydia even outside her summons can muster a decent (at least) physical attack and some black magic.

That only applies if you count only Yuna's limited "white mage" track, which doesn't even give you all the white mage spells, (unlocking Holy takes more work than unlocking the path over to another "job" track, IIRC,) and really, in a choice between having a white mage and having a black mage, white mages are more critical to party success, anyway.

Even if you play normally, Yuna's probably going to either be learning something like black magic or thief skills or something in addition to her white magic by the end of the game, (which is what you're talking about if you're comparing it to meteor,) and no game has a more extreme late-game grind (with 5-digit HP and damage caps, no less!) than FFX.

And all that's forgetting FFX-2, (although I don't blame you for trying,) where Yuna was basically whatever class she wanted on a whim.

Final Fantasy IV/II US was really the most restrictive of the Final Fantasies when it came to classes/jobs, since even the original let you choose what jobs you would play with, and IX let you swap characters.
