He was never a wuss in the manga, well alright he was at the beginning, but then he manned up. The anime refuses to do anything besides rape the manga's storyline so it can have a stupid fanservice harem comedy that falls flat. It has no character development and any sort of real plot line.
The manga isn't perfect, but it's much less fanservicey then the anime and the characters and storyline make actual progress, although it does have a few recent weak chapters/
