There was a series on the History Channel (back in the 2000s) in which they pitted a Spartan against a samurai. The Spartan won.
Many people commented that the samurai should have won, not the Spartan, because he didn't have full body armor.
But if you think about it, who needs body armor when you have a shield that basically does the same job.
