Maybe I'm looking into it too much, but Koishi's lack of eyes (including her closed third) makes a nice statement of contrast against the rest of the characters, whose eyes are glowing and highlighted.

not at all. i thought the same thing and think it's a very good way of subtly characterizing the cast.
