Some versions of Ebisu's myth have it that, after being cast adrift as Hiruko, he was found and raised by an Ainu fisherman. The word "ebisu" is also an archaic derogatory term for ethnic Others in general, but especially the Ainu.
"Atusi" is a romaji rendition of the katakana spelling of the term for Ainu robes. Another variation is "attus," an attempted transliteration directly from Ainu Itak to the Latin alphabet.
