Printing technique that uses a carved block of material, typically wood or linoleum. The artist carves a mirrored relief into the material, creating something akin to a large stamp. The carving is inked and transferred to a medium, typically paper or cloth. The final piece is the resulting impression. See post #3621502 for examples of both a carved piece of linoleum and a print. Advanced techniques allow for multiple colors within the same image, such as in post #1199983 and in The Great Wave off Kanagawa aka post #4314715.

Do not confuse prints with digital art, watercolor, or marker art. Printed areas are either flat colors or simple gradients. These areas show the texture of the paper and texture of the ink that result from the inking and printing. Smooth, detailed shading is impossible to achieve and is a sign that the piece in question is made with another medium. Refer to post #1394354 and its child for a comparison.
