    仏壇

A household altar in Japanese Buddhist culture, meant to provide a place to pray to the Buddha or the dead. A butsudan can either take the form of a more ornate platform or, more commonly, a cabinet. When butsudan are used to revere the dead, one may often find iei, incense burners, or candles stored inside. Otherwise, they store religious icons such as statues of the Buddha or scrolls.
