georgia (state)
A state in the south-east region of the United States, and one of the original thirteen colonies to form the nation after the American Revolution. Nicknamed "the Peach State", Georgia was one of the eleven states to secede from the Union to form the Confederate States of America in 1861, and during the ensuing American Civil War suffered severe damage, famously being the reluctant host of Sherman's March to the Sea.
The largest state by land mass fully East of the Mississippi River, Georgia's capital city Atlanta is both its largest city and most populous, with more than half of the state's total population living in the Atlanta metro area.
Georgia is known for several sports teams and music groups, and is also the home of several large corporations like Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines. It has also in recent years made inroads in filming and movies, surpassing California in 2016 as the state with the most feature films produced on location.
