gorget

An armored collar, originally used to protect the throat. Sometimes strapped directly to the breastplate.

After the Middle Ages, particularly in the 18th century, the gorget had become an ornamental signifier of rank for officers in many European armies, but this too largely fell out of favor by the mid-19th century.

Examples

Classical armor gorget
Later ornamental gorget
