No, they were more or less aware of the ships overall size and gun caliber by 1944. When debating about whether going to blow her up with a battleline on her last sortie they specifically talked about her heavier armament in briefings. The main reason it even took that long was because, frankly, the ships never really DID anything until 1944 so they didn't really have clear images or reports to make assessments with.

She's bigger than Musashi in that swimsuit, which is contrary to her normal damage CG. In fact, the more recent the CG is, the bigger those ships get. I suspect it's a reference to the Yamato class's continued AA upgrades through their service; that is to say, their bust will continue to grow throughout their life (all 5 years of it).
